Rosemary for Hair: What It Does and How to Use It

Rosemary is everywhere in hair care. Here is what it can and cannot do for your hair, and how to use a rosemary shampoo and conditioner in a simple routine.

Rosemary is everywhere in hair care right now, from shampoos to scalp oils. It smells fresh, it feels like a small ritual, and it has a long history in natural beauty. But what can it actually do for your hair, and what is just hype?

Here is a simple, honest guide.

Why Is Rosemary Used in Hair Care?

Rosemary is a herb from the Mediterranean. In hair care you will usually find it as rosemary leaf oil or rosemary extract. It gives products a clean, herbal scent and is often combined with ingredients that cleanse and soften the hair.

For most people, the appeal is the experience: a fresh-smelling wash, a clean-feeling scalp and a routine that feels a little more natural.

What About Rosemary and Hair Growth?

You may have seen claims online that rosemary makes hair grow faster. The research on this is limited and mostly small-scale, so it is too early to promise results. A rosemary shampoo or conditioner is a care product, not a treatment.

If you notice sudden or noticeable hair loss, it is best to talk to a doctor or dermatologist. They can look at the cause, which is often something a shampoo cannot fix.

Rosemary Shampoo: Clean Hair, Fresh Scalp

A good everyday shampoo cleanses without stripping your hair. Our Rosemary Shampoo combines rosemary leaf oil with aloe vera and a mild, plant-derived cleanser, so it is gentle enough for regular use.

Tip: focus the shampoo on your scalp, where oil and product build up. The lather that runs through your lengths when you rinse is usually enough to clean them.

Rosemary Conditioner: Soft, Easy-to-Comb Hair

Conditioner smooths the outside of the hair after washing, which helps with tangles and makes hair feel softer. Our Rosemary Conditioner has a creamy texture with rosemary extract, wheat protein and sunflower oil.

Tip: apply conditioner to the mid-lengths and ends, not the roots, and leave it on for one to three minutes before rinsing.

A Simple Rosemary Hair Routine

1. Wash
Wet your hair well, massage a small amount of shampoo into your scalp and rinse.

2. Condition
Squeeze out excess water, apply conditioner to your lengths and ends, wait a minute or two and rinse.

3. Finish
Gently pat your hair dry with a towel instead of rubbing it. On dry ends, a light leave-in such as our mango leave-in conditioner can help.

Prefer a Solid Option?

A shampoo bar is a handy alternative to a bottle. It is compact, easy to take when travelling and lasts a long time if you let it dry between uses.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

There is no single rule. Many people wash every two to three days, while people with an oily scalp or an active lifestyle may prefer to wash more often. With a mild shampoo, washing more often is usually no problem. Pay attention to how your scalp feels and adjust from there.

Good to Know

Pure rosemary essential oil is strong. Do not apply it undiluted to your scalp. Ready-made products already use it in a suitable amount. If you have sensitive skin, try a new product on a small area first, and stop using it if irritation occurs.
